Xth Sustainable Mountain Development Summit

The Integrated Mountain Initiative (IMI) and the Darjeeling Himalaya Initiative are holding the Xth Sustainable Mountain Development Summit (SMDS) from 18th to 20th November 2021. SMDS X is being organized in the Darjeeling – Kalimpong Hills and the theme of this year is “Towards One Health: Making our mountains resilient”. The 4 broad thematic areas are One Health Response to Zoonosis, Biodiversity and Ecosystems for Human Health, Sustainable Food Systems, and Governance and Institutional Processes that Promote One Health. 

In addition to the main event, there are two other side events being held  – Mountain Legislator’s Meet (20th December) and the Indian Himalayan Youth Summit (20th December). The Mountain Legislators’ Meet will bring together elected representatives of the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) states to discuss One Health with a key focus around plastic pollution and its impacts thereof to lead to a policy recommendation on plastic waste specifically for the mountains. The Youth Summit provides a platform for the youths of the IHR to converge and share their perspectives on various issues every year.

18th November – Day 1 

Time: 2 PM to 3.35 PM

Inagural Session and Keynote Speech

The keynote speaker for this year’s SMDS is Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist, WHO, and the chief guest is Dr. Pema Gyamtso, Director General, ICIMOD.


Time: 4 PM to 5.25 PM 

Panel Discussion: Setting the Context for SMDS X Thematic Discussions 

The opening remarks of this session will be done by Dr. V.B. Mathur, Chairperson of, National Biodiversity Authority. The other panelists are Mr. Ravi Singh, CEO and Secretary General, WWF-India); Dr. Vandana Shiva, Founder of Navdanya, Uttarakhand; and Dr. Sandeep Chaudhuri, Assistant Professor of Veterinary College, Nagpur, One Health Mission, Maharashtra.

19th November – Day 2

Time: 11 AM to 1 PM

One Health Response to Zoonosis

The panelists for this session are Dr. R.C. Dhiman, ICMR, Government of India; Dr. Lallianpuii Kawlni, Wildlife Institute of India; Dr. Thinley Bhutia, SARAH, Government of Sikkim; Mr. Rajarshi Chakraborty, State Project Officer, Sikkim, GoI-UNDP-GEF SECURE Himalaya project; and Dr. Sunita Pradhan, DHI/ATREE; and STS Lepcha, IMI.


Time: 2 PM to 4 PM

Biodiversity and Ecosystems for Human Health

The introduction to the session will be given by Dr. G.S. Rawat, IMI followed by the three keynote talks by Prof. Uma Rama Krishnan, NCBS, Bangalore; Dr. Nakul Chettri, ICIMOD, Kathmandu, Nepal; and Dr. Melari Nongrum, Martin Luther Christian University, Shillong, Meghalaya. The other panelists are Dr. Sarala Khaling, DHI, ATREE, and Mr. Deependra Sunar, DHI / WWF-India.

Sustainable Food Systems

The panelists for this session are Ms. Binita Shah, IMI/SARG; Bah Phrang Roy, Coordinator, The Indigenous Partnership for Agrobiodiversity and Food Sovereignty; Mr. Biju Negi, Beej Bachao Andolan; Mr. Roshan Rai, Councillor IMI/DHI/DLR Prerna; Amit Khurana, Centre for Science and Environment; and R P Gurung, IMI/ECOSS.

20th November – Day 3

Time: 10.00 AM to 2.15 PM

Mountain Legislator’s Meet 

The session speakers are Mr. PD Rai, President, IMI; Ms. Divya Dutt, UNEP; Shri Chowna Mein, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister Arunachal Pradesh; Shri Premchand Aggarwala, Hon’ble Speaker, Uttarakhand LA; Shri Sanjay Jaiswal, Chairperson, Water Resources Committee; Shri James Sangma, Minister, Department of Forests, Environment & CC, GoM; and Shri Sushil Ramola, Former President of IMI.

Youth Reflections and Way Forward

The session speakers are Mr. Amba Jamir, Mr. Krishna Rautela, and Raj Mariawala, Director, MHI.

Time: 2 PM to 4.30 PM

Governance and Institutional Processes that Promote One Health

The session speakers are Dr. Sarala Khaling, ATREE / DHI; Dr. V B Mathur, Chairman, National Biodiversity Authority; Shri Jane Alam, IAS, Chief Secretary, Nagaland (TBC); Shri S Ponnambalam, IAS, PS GTA; Sh.
